What drew you to the field of therapy, and how did your journey as a therapist begin?

My interest in counseling began in high school during a social services class and the realization of what therapy is, and where I discovered a passion for helping others. I often found myself engaged in deep conversations with friends and family, guiding them through their challenges. This innate ability to listen and support others inspired me to pursue a degree in Counseling Psychology. Throughout my journey as a therapist, I have been continually inspired by each client’s unique path, reinforcing my commitment to fostering a safe and compassionate space for healing and growth.

Can you describe your therapeutic approach and what clients can expect from a session with you?

My therapeutic approach is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and respect for each individual’s unique journey. I draw from various modalities, including person-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and mindfulness practices, tailoring my methods to fit each client’s needs and goals, as a unique experience.

In our sessions, you can expect a warm and welcoming environment where you feel safe to express yourself without judgment. I prioritize active listening, encouraging open dialogue to help you explore their thoughts and emotions. We will laugh, we will cry, and I will be there as the supportive therapist you need. Together, we’ll work on identifying patterns, setting achievable goals, and developing practical strategies for overcoming challenges. My aim is to empower you, fostering resilience and self-discovery while providing support every step of the way.

What therapeutic modalities do you often incorporate in your sessions, and how do they help clients in their healing journey?

In my sessions, I often incorporate a blend of therapeutic modalities tailored to each individual's unique needs. Some of the key approaches may include:

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This modality helps you identify and challenge negative thought patterns. By recognizing how thoughts influence feelings and behaviors, you can develop healthier perspectives and coping strategies.

  2. Person-Centered Therapy: Emphasizing empathy and unconditional positive regard, this approach allows a safe space for you to explore their feelings. It promotes self-acceptance and personal growth, allowing you to connect more deeply with your authentic selves.

  3. Mindfulness and Acceptance-Based Practices: Incorporating mindfulness techniques helps you stay present and manage stress. This approach encourages acceptance of thoughts and feelings, reducing anxiety and enhancing emotional regulation.

  4. Narrative Therapy: By exploring and reframing your personal narratives, you can gain insight into your experiences and re-author your stories. This empowers you to view challenges from a different perspective and reclaim your independence.

These are just some of the modalities I incorporate in session and it is important to remember, it is tailored to your own specific needs. By integrating these modalities, I aim to support you as a client in your healing journey, helping you to develop self-awareness, resilience, and practical skills to navigate life's challenges.

At Eras, we value authenticity and empathy. How do these values play a role in your practice?

A: As a therapist, I deeply value authenticity and empathy, as they are foundational to effective and meaningful relationships in therapy and in everyday life. By being myself, I encourage clients to embrace their true selves, which is crucial for personal exploration and growth. When you see me as a real person—someone who is open, honest and authentic—you will have a safe space to share without the fear of judgement.

Empathy enables me to connect with you on a deeper level, understanding your emotions and perspectives. By actively listening and validating your feelings, I help you to feel seen and understood. Together, authenticity and empathy create a supportive environment where you can feel safe to share your experiences, fostering resilience and personal transformation.

How do you ensure your practice is inclusive and culturally informed?

To ensure my therapy is inclusive and culturally informed, I take several key steps:

  1. Ongoing Education: I engage in continuous learning about diverse cultures, identities, and social issues. This helps me stay informed about the unique challenges different communities face. As a therapist, the learning never stops!

  2. Individualized Care: I recognize that each individual's background is unique. I tailor my therapeutic approach to honor specific cultural values, beliefs, and experiences.

  3. Creating a Safe Environment: I strive to foster a welcoming space where individual's feel comfortable sharing their identities and experiences. Open dialogue about culture and background is encouraged to enhance understanding and allow for the person to feel comfortable.

  4. Cultural Sensitivity: I actively listen to individual’s perspectives on how their cultural context influences their thoughts and behaviors. This sensitivity allows me to provide relevant support.

  5. Feedback and Collaboration: I value individuals' insights regarding their cultural needs and preferences, inviting their input to ensure therapy aligns with their experiences.

By integrating these practices, I aim to provide a therapeutic experience that respects and uplifts the diverse identities of my clients.

What advice do you have for someone who’s feeling nervous about starting therapy for the first time?

A: Starting therapy can feel daunting, but it’s a courageous step toward healing and self-discovery. Here are a few tips that may help ease your nerves:

  • Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s completely normal to feel anxious about beginning therapy. Recognize that these feelings are part of the process, and many people share similar concerns.

  • Prepare for Your Session: If it helps, jot down your thoughts or questions before your first appointment. This can serve as a helpful guide and make it easier to express yourself.

  • Be Open and Honest: Share your feelings about being nervous with your therapist. They are there to support you and will appreciate your honesty.

  • Celebrate Your Courage: Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength. Each step you take in therapy is a step toward greater understanding and growth. I am so glad you are here!

Outside of therapy, how do you take care of your own mental well-being?

Life can become overwhelming, and it’s often our self-care practices that take a backseat. I understand the importance of consistently prioritizing self-care and nurturing my own well-being. To recharge, I love connecting with nature through activities like camping, hiking, and swimming. I also recognize when I need to slow down and take a “me” day, which might simply involve lounging on the couch and enjoying movies— and that’s perfectly okay! Connecting with family and friends is also vital for me, as spending quality time together helps me destress and maintain my mental health.

What do you love most about being a therapist?

What I love most about being a therapist is the privilege of walking alongside individuals as they navigate their challenges. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness their growth and resilience, and to be a part of their journey toward self-discovery. The connections I form with clients, built on trust and understanding, make my work deeply fulfilling. Everyone deserves to have someone rooting for them!
